Castify demonstrates SAP LSO acceleration
over very long distances
London, May 5, 2006 - Within
the Innova project, three universities in Paraguay teach
around 200 teachers how to use the Internet and standard
computer-based applications. The becoming teachers access
e-learning courses on the SAP LSO platform running in
a German hosting center.
To enable the learners using
the courses in acceptable quality, the three universities
have installed Castify C-Router software with the SAP
LSO acceleration modules on three standard PC servers.
The C-Router software is monitored and controlled by
the Castify NOC software that has been installed side-by-side
to the SAP LSO service in the German hosting center.
The e-learning courses are distributed to the C-Routers
before the start of the course, and the student machines
are served in the high speed of a local area network
(LAN).
This setup demonstrates impressively
how Castify enables remote e-learning over very long
distances. Before the installation of the C-Router software,
the learners experienced very long delays caused by
long network delays and small bandwidth throughput.
The typical round-trip time (RTT) between the SAP LSO
service in the German hosting center and the participants
in Paraguay was longer than 1,2 seconds. Such an RTT
renders a Web based service such as SAP LSO nearly unusable
for remote users. With the installation of the Castify
C-Routers, the RTT dropped below 1 milliseconds, since
the courses are now served directly from the C-Router
over the LAN. The quality for the students in Paraguay
became therefore as good as the quality experienced
by the supervisors in Germany. Now, hundreds of becoming
teachers use SAP LSO courses concurrently on a daily
basis in Paraguay.
Besides the service acceleration
for the end-user, Castify's software reduced the network
traffic over the WAN links linearly with the number
of trained teacher. Since each teacher has to follow
the same course, the prepositioning of the course contents
on the C-Routers used the expensive WAN bandwidth only
once instead of once per end-user. This is especially
important for WAN links in very remote locations and
multi-hop network topologies.
Vicente Ayala, Chief of IT Dept.
Catholic University of Asuncion (Paraguay), Innova project
partner, said: "Due to the low bandwidth access to the
Internet of our University, the access to the content
on the SAP LSO server in Germany was very slow. This
situation substantially improved with the installation
of Castify's software. In particular, the major improvement
was the access to the multimedia e-learning materials."
Fernando Lyardet, Innova project
manager, SAP Research, explained: "SAP Research successfully
rolled out a full blended learning project in Paraguay
called Innova, to test the feasibility of using the
SAP LSO on nationwide, vocational training programs
in emerging countries with minimal communications infrastructure.
The Castify software provided the Innova Project with
a key functionality to effectively overcome the accessibility
problems in limited or even partially connected scenarios."
